Abstract

Utilizing recently made available histochemical methods, analysis was made on the distribution and the significance of mucopolysaccharides that are demonstrable in the stromal connective tissues of breasts.
It is demonstrated that the acid-mucopolysaccharides showed a changing pattern in the content and stainning character relating to menstrual cycle. The neutral mucopolysaccharides did not significanly alter with the menstrual cycle.
Intensely positive Periodic Acid?whiff reaction was seen in interlobular stroma and basement memb ane. Particularly significant was that there was a definite correlation between intense metachromasia and of estrogenic stimulation.
The findings are correlated in the normal breasts and in fibroadenomas.
In general there is no specific mucopolysaccharide pattern among various breast diseases. It appears that the neutral mucopolysaccharides are mainly concerned with the
supportive function in breast stroma. The acid-mucopolysaccharides showed a definite functional alterations.
